The world of Crazy Rich Asians is set to return, this time as an HBO series. Constance Wu, Henry Golding and Ronny Chieng have been confirmed as series regulars, while Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh will reprise her role in a recurring capacity. The upcoming show will continue exploring the extravagant lives, family rivalries and social politics surrounding Singapore's wealthiest circles.
Chieng is expected to return as Edison "Eddie" Cheng, Nick's status-conscious cousin from Hong Kong. The return of other familiar cast members, including Awkwafina, Ken Jeong and Gemma Chan, has yet to be officially confirmed.
Adele Lim, who co-wrote the 2018 film, will return as showrunner and executive producer. She will be joined by original director Jon M. Chu, author Kevin Kwan, and producers Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson.
Lim expressed excitement about expanding the story beyond the film, which introduced audiences to the complicated relationships and lavish lifestyles of Kwan's characters. "It's a âCrazy Rich' family reunion! This series is the sequel we've been waiting for, but instead of just one movie, we get eight episodes to delve into the characters and worlds of Kevin Kwan's brilliant books," she said.
Chu also marked the announcement with an emotional Instagram post, reflecting on the impact the original film had on his career and the people involved in making it. "Eight years ago, Crazy Rich Asians changed my life, and I got to make it with the most creative and hilarious group of people I've ever known," he wrote.
Acknowledging the long-running demand for another instalment, the filmmaker added, "Finally, I get to answer the question I've been asked almost every day for eight years: âWhen are we getting the sequel?' Well⦠bok bok b----, we're back."
The series will draw from Kwan's broader book trilogy and continue after the events of the 2018 film. With eight episodes planned, the format is expected to offer more room to explore the characters, family dynamics and scandals that shape the lives of Singapore's elite.
The original Crazy Rich Asians, released in 2018, became a major milestone for Asian representation in Hollywood. Featuring an ensemble led by Wu, Golding and Yeoh, the romantic comedy was the first major Hollywood studio film in 25 years to feature an all-Asian principal cast. It went on to earn more than USD 239 million worldwide.
With Lim and Chu returning alongside Kwan, the upcoming series brings together key creative forces behind the original film. The expansion into television also allows the franchise to explore more of the books' sprawling social world and the relationships that made the story a global success. Production is scheduled to begin in 2027. HBO has not yet announced a release date, and further casting details are awaited.
