A new Broadway-style musical titled ‘Kaneez' is set to premiere at the Jamshed Bhabha Auditorium in Mumbai on November 28 and 29. Directed by theatre veteran Randhir Ranjan Roy, this production weaves a narrative exploring profound themes of love and societal constraints within a divided society.

The musical draws inspiration from the real-life story of Tanno Bai, a celebrated courtesan in 1920s from Patna, and her devoted admirer, the ritualistic priest Dharikshan Tiwari. Their relationship challenged the social divisions of caste and class at the time. The musical revisits this historical account through a contemporary theatrical lens, examining how love endures despite social constraints.

The story follows a young priest, portrayed by Siddharth Nigam and Raayo S Bakhirta, and a courtesan, played by Gulki Joshi and Kirti Killedar, as they navigate the boundaries imposed by faith and tradition. The cast also includes Jaya Bhattacharya, Sanjay Swaraj, Noyrika Bhatheja, Sunitt Razzdan, Amit Ghosh, Dev Surana, Hardik Thakkar, Vikas Tiwari, and Kalyan Choudhary.

Director Randhir Ranjan Roy said, "Kaneez is more than a tale of forbidden love; it serves as a critique of societal constructs that limit human connection. Through this presentation, I hope audiences reflect on the tension between love and tradition."

Siddharth Nigam described the role as "an emotionally layered character navigating a space where love and faith often conflict." Gulki Joshi and Kirti Killedar also spoke of the production's focus on the resilience of love amid societal pressures.

The production includes live music composed by Rahul-Anjan, choreography by Arunima Roy, and stage design by Chetan Chand. The soundtrack features vocal performances by Shaan, Papon, Javed Ali, and Kirti Killedar, blending bhajans, thumris, and elements of classical and retro Indian music.

Shaan, who performs a bhajan in the musical, said, 'The music in Kaneez conveys emotions that words cannot.' Papon and Javed Ali also contribute to the soundtrack.
