Cannes Film Festival is underway, and continues to make headlines for everything - from global cinema to sartorial choices. Held in the French Riviera, the film festival has been a fashion hotspot for decades with celebrities adorning the most glittering outfits and walking the red carpet. Jury Member Deepika Padukone and Cannes regular Aishwarya Rai have been turning heads in a range of divine outfits. Experts pick their favourite red carpet looks from Cannes, and share a step-by-step guide on how to recreate Padukone's look.

"My most favourite red carpet look on Aishwarya was the pink pastel gown by Gaurav Gupta inspired by Venus. It was a fashion meets art moment. The immaculate construction of the gown, and the tasteful colour merged beautifully well. The side-swept smooth curls, light make up and jewellery complimented the dress perfectly. Everything about the look screamed grace and it was one of the best red carpet looks this season," says designer Swatee Singh.

Aishwarya Rai aced the look with her flawless hair and make-up. Beauty professional and education director at Enrich, Asha Hariharan says, "Personally, the Venus gown with beautiful pleats was love at first sight. The drama that the designer has created with a wave-like structure at the back was outstanding. I believe it was a great idea to keep her hair open and tousled and slightly wave; it complimented the wave that the gown had. The make-up looks on point as the actress went with light metallic pink lipstick, and a good amount of shimmer - opting for nice and flushed pink cheeks and highlighted cheekbones. Rai wore a lot of mascara and eyelashes and winged her eyes for her eyes. I feel that this is similar to the other look she wore with a black ball gown. The look would do great with a combination of metallic lipstick and glitter on the eyes with a mix of colours from pink to mauve; one needs to carefully place it in such a way that it highlights the colour of her eyes too."

Deepika Padukone in Sabyasachi

"Deepika left everyone awestruck in the Bengal Tiger saree consisting of the hand embellished sequin stripes in the colours of the Bengal tiger. This spectacular concept saree from Sabyasachi showcases both Indian Silhouettes and Indian Culture to the world in a really contemporary way. Kind of like an Indian version of the animal print. The actor teamed the saree with an all-black sequin bustier which made sure the attention just stayed on the pattern of the saree. The drapes of the striped saree gave the illusion of movement of the Bengal tiger while keeping the grace intact," shares designer Sadhvi Suri.

Commenting on her impressive eye make-up and hair, Hariharan adds, "The saree and her overall look here are very retro and have a modern look to them. As the saree is just so strong, it makes sense to create a make-up and hair look that's equally stunning. The actress has put on a warm, muted, and slightly darker foundation that has been exploded with warm tones of blush and rouge. The eyeliner is not just winged but there is an overdose of an entire eye that has been painted black. This has been done very skilfully and tactically as sometimes one needs to ensure it looks elegant and looks proportionate without crossing the line of looking comical."

Hariharan elaborates on Padukone's hair, "The bun is textured and high and because of that, it adds to the fact that it's more of a fashion statement. The representation of the band that goes across the hair as it's very reminiscent of Indian jewels and Indian bridal jewellery where people wear maang tikkas. I must also say that it's beautiful and a lot of Indian girls can copy this look and hairstyle. Of course, it doesn't have to be this exaggerated, but a winged eyeliner looks beautiful."

"Padukone in LV's red gown looked nothing short of stunning. The bright gown is elaborate, so her makeup was kept subtle, and she seemed to be flushed with healthy skin, without overdoing the eyes. The focus was just on the skin and to highlight the outfit instead of contrasting it she wore a fabulous red lipstick. She wore this red lipstick which stood out on her face, and her skin looked moisturised and had a beautiful sheen to it. The actress has been known to keep her hair in front with ruffles and slightly undone and the sides are nice and tight and well tucked back; this was a beautiful way of wearing a hairstyle that was simple yet fashion-forward," shares Hariharan.

Below, the beauty expert shares a step-by-step routine to help you recreate Deepika Padukone's dreamy red carpet look.

Skin

  1. Start with a serum and an under eye cream.
  2. Apply a light moisturiser all over your face.
  3. The next step is to apply face oil. There are some exquisite luxurious formulations on the market. Do look them up. They are the ultimate skin food to apply when you want your skin and foundation to look pearlescent.

Base

  1. Dab on an orange shade of concealer under the eyes.
  2. Using a buffing brush, apply a foundation all over the face in a rotation movement with minimum pressure. This ensures that your foundation stays transparent to achieve the glass like finish. Don't forget to apply the foundation on the lips too leaving out the eyes.
  3. Dab on a lighter shade of concealer on under eyes and blend well to look seamless.
  4. If needed, powder very lightly. This look uses minimum powder to ensure skin looks moist and dewy.

Eyes

  1. Apply a soft brown on the brows.
  2. Stroke on the feather lines with a darker brown shade to mimic eyebrow hair.
  3. Now take a little gel and brush out eyebrows.
  4. Apply an eye primer on the lids.
  5. Apply a soft nude eye shadow on the entire lid. This can be a soft shimmer eye shadow in any medium skin colour.
  6. Now apply a light champagne or pearl colour eye shadow on the brow bone. This will provide a beautiful gradient to the eyes.
  7. Now apply loads of mascara to contrast the white of the eyeball.
  8. Follow Hollywood's secret makeup trick and use eye drops before starting eye makeup.

Cheeks

  1. Never over contour as this makeup is soft.
  2. Apply a medium pearlescent blush under the cheekbone and defuse in full blown circular motion.
  3. Now overlap this with a medium to light colour blush which is lighter than the first one - again in a slight shimmer texture, over the first blush on the cheek bone.
  4. The third and final layer to complete the cheek makeup is to choose a soft highlighter in a hint of gold or pearl and overlap it a little over the second blush colour so that it sits a little on and above the cheekbone. This layering of 3 levels of blush and highlighter adds finesse.

Lips

  1. On lips already coated with the foundation, very lightly outline the lips with a well pointed red lip pencil.
  2. Now apply a very small amount of red lipstick all over the lips making sure to go over the lip outline too.
  3. Very lightly powder the lips and dust off any extra powder with a brush.
  4. Now repeat the lip liner paying special attention to the shape of the lips. Create carefully a bow shape or a round shoe on the top lip.
  5. Now, using a lip brush, smoothe out the line so it blends into the lips. This step allows the lipstick to stay on for a long period without having to touch it up!
  6. The finale of the look now - apply the final coat of red lipstick. Apply always with a brush to coat evenly and completely!
