Imagine entering a theatre and finding yourself surrounded by fluttering wings, curious characters and a story that needs you to take flight. Anitha Balachandran's story Mister Jeejeebhoy and the Birds (Young Zubaan), has been reimagined as a play, written and directed by Shaili Sathyu of the Gillo Repertory Theatre.

It follows two siblings, a peculiar aunt and a flock of escaped birds in a whimsical tale packed with mischief and imagination. Here, the audience is part of the adventure, with children helping the story take shape as it unfolds.

"It is a fun, interactive play, which utilises imagination. The play moves ahead with children's participation in it. Even the birds in the play are made by the children in the audience, putting together the pieces. The idea is for children to have fun and participate," says Sathyu.

Before the play commences, children get to piece together the birds themselves with material provided by the theatre group's team, making the experience feel like one giant game of make-believe. With a quirky story, playful participation and plenty of room for imagination to soar, this is a show where little hands and big ideas take centre stage.
