Participants during a previous astophotography trail
A few hours away from Mumbai's rush, an outdoor trail by Vagabond Experiences offers a refreshingly different adventure - an overnight escape into nature built around stillness, simplicity, and the night sky. Named Plateau & Planets, at this easy trail near Matheran, participants will be led to the Garbett Plateau, a location chosen for its minimal light pollution and expansive views.
The journey begins late in the evening, where participants will assemble at Neral railway station before heading toward the trailhead. From there, a short forest walk, lasting for under an hour begins. The trail is beginner-friendly, making it suitable for first-timers. Walking through a dark forest at midnight, guided only by headlamps, adds a quiet sense of adventure. Along the way, participants may encounter nocturnal wildlife such as frogs, insects, or small reptiles, making the journey as engaging as the destination.
The Half Moon captured through telescope during a session
At Garbett Plateau, the experience opens up into something truly special. Away from the glow of city lights, the sky reveals its full brilliance. Participants spend the night stargazing through telescopes, spotting constellations, planets like Saturn, and even the Milky Way with the naked eye. The session is led by a team of experts, including astrophysics graduates, astronomy enthusiasts, and naturalists, who guide the group through celestial observations and stories blending science with mythology. The night continues with a relaxed campfire, light activities, and even opportunities to try astrophotography, before ending with a serene sunrise over the hills.
Shannon Fernandes (right), co-founder of Vagabond Experiences explains, "This experience is not too far from the city. Once you're there, it's completely silent. You're cut off from noise and surrounded by nature; it's a peaceful night." He also highlights the efforts to make the experience responsible and safe, adding, "We always try to work with locals because they know the area best, and it helps us create more meaningful and secure experience." Local guides accompany the group, ensuring safe navigation while also contributing to the community.
