In a crackdown on repeat narcotics offenders, the Anti-Narcotics Cell (ANC) of the Mumbai Police has secured the preventive detention of a 43-year-old alleged drug trafficker under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PIT-NDPS) Act, 1988, officials said.
The accused, Tamijul Haider Mazharhool Haider Rizvi alias Misam (43), a resident of Malwani in Malad West, has been detained for one year and lodged in Nashik Road Central Jail following approval from the Maharashtra Home Department.
According to police officials, the action was initiated after the Kandivali Unit of the Anti-Narcotics Cell found that the accused was a habitual offender who allegedly continued to engage in drug trafficking despite multiple arrests, court proceedings and previous convictions.
Investigators said he repeatedly returned to narcotics-related activities after securing bail in earlier cases.
Police records indicate that he has been booked in seven cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act over the years.
A case against him was registered under Sections 8(a) and 22(b) of the NDPS Act, 1985. During the investigation, officers found that charge sheets had been filed in several cases and that he had previously been convicted.
Despite legal action, authorities allege that he resumed involvement in the illegal drug trade after being released on bail.
Based on his criminal record and continued alleged involvement in narcotics offences, the Anti-Narcotics Cell submitted a proposal through the Mumbai Police Commissioner seeking preventive detention under the PIT-NDPS Act.
The Maharashtra Home Department approved the proposal, leading to his detention and transfer to Nashik Road Central Jail on June 2, 2026.
Officials said the accused has been named in several NDPS cases registered at Malwani Police Station between 2020 and 2025, in addition to a 2026 case registered by the Kandivali Unit of the ANC.
The cases primarily relate to the possession, distribution and trafficking of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances.
Police said the latest action is part of Mumbai Police's ongoing campaign against repeat drug offenders and organised narcotics networks.
With Misam's detention, the Anti-Narcotics Cell has now taken preventive action against ten habitual drug offenders under the PIT-NDPS Act in 2026. Authorities said nine other accused, who allegedly resumed criminal activities after obtaining bail, have also been detained under the law this year.
Officials maintained that the preventive detention measure is aimed at curbing repeat offences and disrupting illegal drug trafficking operations across the city.
