In a major anti-drug operation, the anti-narcotics cell of Kalyan Police have arrested three history-sheeters and seized 107.05 kg of ganja valued at Rs 21.40 lakh from Kalyan West in Thane district on Monday.
A team led by Sub-Inspector Anil Gaikwad was patrolling within the Khadakpada Police Station limits to track drug peddlers and a wanted accused. Around 2.05 pm, the team spotted three men behaving suspiciously near the Wadeghar dumping ground.
When approached, the trio allegedly tried to flee but were apprehended by the police after a brief chase.
The accused have been identified as Wasim Khan alias Pila (36) from Bhiwandi, Dinesh Kumar Saroj (30) from Wagle Estate in Thane, and Mohit Verma (27) from Mulund West.
During the search, police recovered 107.05 kg of ganja worth Rs 21.40 lakh, cash worth Rs 10,500, and mobile phones collectively valued at Rs 41,000, taking the total seizure to Rs 21.91 lakh.
A case has been registered at Khadakpada police station under Sections 8(a), 20(b)(ii)(A), and 29 of the NDPS Act. The accused were produced before court and remanded to police custody till Saturday.
Police said all three have previous cases under the NDPS Act. Khan and Saroj were previously arrested by the Ghatkopar ANC of Mumbai Police for peddling and distributing drugs, while Verma is a history-sheeter with active drug cases in Mulund. They were involved in distributing narcotics in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, police added. Further probe is underway.
