Mumbai: 22-year-old man dies after group brutally assaults him, attacks with sharp weapon in Mahim; 5 held

A 22-year-old man died after he was allegedly brutally assaulted him in Mumbai's Mahim area, an official said, adding that five people were held in the matter so far.

The deceased was also attacked with a sharp weapon.

"Six suspects were booked in the matter out of which five have been arrested and efforts to trace and nab the remaining accused was underway," the police official said.

According to the police, following the incident the Mahim Police Station has registered a murder case after the man died following an assault near the gate of S.L. Raheja Hospital area early on Thursday morning.

The incident took place at around 5:30 am after a verbal argument reportedly broke out between the deceased and one of the accused persons, police said.

Assault following argument

The police said that the victim was allegedly attacked by six accused persons using hands and fists near the hospital gate.

The injured man was taken for medical treatment but later died during treatment at the hospital.

Following the incident, Mahim Police registered a case under sections 103, 115, 189, 190, 191 and 352 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

A team of officials rushed to the spot after the incident and launched a detailed probe into the matter.

The team of police officials quickly identified the suspects and hours later five of the six accused were held, said the official.

Accused taken into custody

Police officials said that most of the accused persons have already been taken into custody and further probe was underway.

Teams have been formed to trace and detain the remaining accused, who is currently absconding.

Police said further investigation into the case is in progress and officials are examining the circumstances that led to the fatal assault.

Old rivalry suspected, probe on

The deceased was identified as Sohail Sheikh, a local resident of Mahim.

"Sheikh was passing through the area when the accused allegedly stopped him. The deceased and the accused got into an argument over an old rivalry. They then also allegedly assaulted him with a sharp weapon. He was rushed to a nearby hospital where doctors declared him dead on arrival," said an official.
