According to the police, 106 office-bearers and workers of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) during a protest in the Gangavihar area under the jurisdiction of Mahim Police Station on Tuesday afternoon.
The police also detained 34 Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) office-bearers who had gathered at MNS Branch No. 190 to oppose the BJYM protest, said an official.
The police said that the BJYM protest was organised at around 3.30 pm.
A total of 106 BJP youth wing members and workers who had gathered for the demonstration were taken into custody.
Meanwhile, 34 MNS office-bearers were also detained after they assembled at the local party office in opposition to the BJYM demonstration.
The BJYM members and MNS workers gathered over a controversy involving MNS leader Amit Thackeray.
The controversy began after a video showing Amit Thackeray during a visit to a college in Maharashtra's Pune on Monday surfaced on social media and went viral.
In the video, Thackeray can allegedly be seen asking MNS workers to remove a photograph of Prime Minister Narendra Modi from a wall. BJP workers objected to the incident, alleging that the action amounted to disrespect towards the Prime Minister.
On Tuesday afternoon, BJP Yuva Morcha members organised a protest in Mahim against Thackeray and the incident shown in the video.
An MNS worker said that a large number of party workers had gathered outside the MNS office after learning about the BJP Yuva Morcha's planned demonstration.
The gathering led to tension in the area, with police personnel deployed to prevent any escalation.
"Members of both groups were given warnings under Sections 68 and 69 of the Maharashtra Police Act before being released," said a police official.
The preventive action was taken to maintain law and order during the protests and prevent any escalation between the two groups.
The Mumbai Police official said no personnel was injured during the protest or the subsequent action.
