A 43-year-old delivery executive has been arrested by the Colaba Police in Mumbai for allegedly molesting an eight-year-old girl under the pretext of asking for directions, officials said.

The accused, identified as Imran Mohammad Sherkhan, is a resident of Cuffe Parade.

He was arrested from his residence on Monday afternoon.

According to police officials, the incident took place around 7 pm on Sunday, October 26, near the staircase on the first floor of a building in Colaba.

The accused allegedly called the girl close to him on the pretext of asking for an address and then behaved inappropriately.

After the girl narrated the incident to her mother, a 35-year-old woman, she immediately approached the Colaba Police Station and lodged a complaint. Acting on the information, a police team launched an investigation and traced the accused using technical inputs. Sherkhan was subsequently detained and taken into custody from his Cuffe Parade residence.

Police have registered a case under Sections 8 and 12 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, and Section 75 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Officials said that the accused was produced before the court and remanded in police custody for further inquiry.
