Mumbai court sentences man to 10 years’ rigorous imprisonment for raping elderly woman

A Mumbai court on Monday sentenced a 40-year-old autorickshaw driver to 10 years' rigorous imprisonment for raping and robbing a 75-year-old woman in 2018, officials said.

The verdict was delivered by Additional Sessions Judge S. M. Agarkar at the Dindoshi Sessions Court.

The case, registered at MHB Colony Police Station under IPC sections 376 (rape), 394 (robbery), 420 (cheating), and other relevant provisions, involved the accused luring the elderly woman into his rickshaw and taking her to a hilly area near Virar, where he raped and robbed her.

The court sentenced the accused to 10 years' rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 5,000 for rape, with an additional one month's imprisonment in case of non-payment. He was also awarded 7 years' rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 2,000 for robbery, with an additional one month's imprisonment if the fine is not paid.

The prosecution was led by Public Prosecutor Mahajan, while former Investigating Officer PI Dhananjay Ligade had filed the charge sheet. The court proceedings were coordinated by PSI Pednekar, PSI Satpute, and PSI Mali under the guidance of Senior Police Inspector Harish Gawli and PI (Crime) Atul Awhad of MHB Colony Police Station, officials said.

Meanwhile, Mumbai Police was recently successful in securing several convictions in matter related to crimes against woman.

In a social media post, Mumbai Police also shared the details of the convictions and wrote, "Message is loud and clear: Every crime against women and children will meet our unwavering pursuit and criminals will be brought to justice. A number of convictions recorded in last few months. Those who harm the innocent will face the full wrath of the law."
