Two arrested for assaulting rickshaw passenger, snatching her purse containing Rs 3,000 in Mumbai's Andheri

The Andheri Police in Mumbai have arrested two men for allegedly robbing a 40-year-old woman autorickshaw passenger by assaulting her and snatching away her purse, containing Rs 3,000.

The complainant, Supriya Datta, told the police that on July 26, around 2.25 pm, she was travelling by an autorickshaw from Terminal 1 of Mumbai airport towards Dombivli. When the rickshaw reached Gundavali Metro station, two unidentified men riding a black KTM Duke motorcycle allegedly approached the vehicle.

According to the complaint, one of the men, who was riding pillion, reached towards Datta and hit her hard on her left hand. He allegedly got into a brief scuffle with her before snatching her purse. The duo then fled the spot on their motorcycle.

The purse contained cash worth Rs 3,000, police said. Following Datta's complaint, the Andheri Police registered a case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

With limited information about the accused, the investigation team began working on their movements and identity.

The police used technical investigation and information from informers to trace the suspects. They eventually managed to identify the two men and arrested them.

Mumbai Police probe accused duo's role in other similar offences

The accused have been identified as Eklaq Mobeen Ansari, 25, and Nilesh Ramcharan Yadav, 23, both residents of Wagle Estate in Thane.

Police said Ansari has a criminal record, with cases registered against him at Parksite Police Station and MIDC Police Station. The police are now conducting further investigation to ascertain whether the duo was involved in other similar offences.

The team worked under the supervision of Assistant Commissioner of Police Yogesh Shinde and Senior Police Inspector Umesh Manchindar of Andheri Police Station. Crime Detection Officer, Assistant Police Inspector (API) Rohan Surve, played a key role in the investigation, along with API Rajendra Pednekar and other personnel.
