Mumbai: ‘Slinky’ burglar hits two Borivli homes 50 metres apart

Two houses just 50 metres apart in Borivli East were burgled within days, with the accused cutting and bending window grills to gain entry. Police believe both incidents were carried out by the same burglar, who made away with cash and valuables after ransacking the homes

Two homes just 50 metres apart on Carter Road in Borivli East were allegedly burglarised in the past week. According to the police, the accused entered both the houses after sawing metal grills and bending them making a small opening. He left both houses ransacked after looting.

The police have registered FIRs in both cases. "We think that both these cases happened on the same night, carried out by the same burglar," a police officer told mid-day.

The incidents

In the first case, which occurred on the night of April 22, the burglar entered a private bungalow home through a small bathroom window on the ground floor after cutting and bending the grills. After finding no highly valuable items, the thief left with a DVR hard disc, some chocolates, and Rs 12,000 cash from a hand purse.


Both homes were ransacked by the accused

The accused attempted to access the first floor but failed to do so. In the second case, which occurred between April 21 and 25 at a ground-floor residence in a non-gated society, the burglar sawed a portion of a window grill and bent the metal, further prying open the sliding windows with a crowbar-like tool. He walked away with Rs 1.1 lakh in cash, along with other precious metal objects worth at least Rs 1.4 lakh.

Dr Asmita Yajnik, 76, the resident of the bungalow, stated, "This incident has shaken residents across our neighbourhood." Smit Vora, 35, the owner of the ground-floor house that was burgled, said, "I hope the thief is caught soon."
