The Vasai Railway Police have detained a constable after he allegedly molested a woman inside a moving Virar-bound train on Saturday in an inebriated state.
According to officers privy to the development, the 32-year-old accused constable was in uniform when he committed the crime.
The constable allegedly touched the woman inappropriately and began checking train tickets of the passengers on the women's second-class compartment.
The accused has been identified as 32-year-old Amol Kishor Sapkale, attached to the Mira Bhayandar Police Commissionerate, police officers said. Following the incident, the complainant dragged him out of the train at Naigaon Railway Station and handed Sapkale over to the Railway Police.
According to officers, the incident occurred when the 29-year-old woman was travelling from Borivali to Vasai Railway Station.
"The woman boarded the train at 2.52 pm from platform number 3 of Borivali Station. The accused constable, Amol Sapkale, entered the second-class ladies compartment at Mira Road Station. While entering the compartment, he inappropriately touched the woman," a police officer said.
"Later, when the train reached Bhayandar station, the constable sat on a seat and began asking women passengers to show their tickets. According to the passengers, the accused was heavily intoxicated," the officer added.
The complainant confronted Sapkale and sought help of another female passenger.
Both the women then dragged Sapkale out of the ladies' compartment at Naigaon Station. They pulled him across the platform and handed him over to the station master, who immediately informed Vasai Railway Police about the incident. The police then took Sapkale into custody.
Senior Inspector Bhagwan Dange of Vasai Railway Police said, "We have registered an FIR against Constable Amol Sapkale. We have also taken his blood sample to confirm whether he was under the influence of alcohol. As per the new BNS law, we have served him a notice to appear for the investigation and released him. We are awaiting the blood report and will take further action accordingly."
