In one of the biggest crackdowns on synthetic drugs, the Mira-Bhayandar Crime Branch Unit-4 has busted an alleged MD drug manufacturing and supply syndicate, arresting 13 accused in total.
Crime Branch officials, under the guidance of Police Commissioner Niket Kaushik, DCP Sandeep Doiphod, and Crime Branch Unit-4 in-charge Police Inspector Pramod Badakh, conducted raids at two locations in Malad's Malvani area and one location in Manori-Gorai, seizing chemicals, machinery, and other equipments, with an estimated value to be around Rs 13.65 crore.
According to the police, if the seized chemicals had been processed, nearly 50 kg of MD drugs could have been manufactured, valued around Rs 100 crore. Earlier, between April 4 and May 7, police had seized nearly 6.773 kg of MD drugs, while arresting 10 persons in connection.
Firdos Arbaaz Qureshi, Arbaaz Vakil Qureshi, Moiz Javed Khan, Armaan Ali Rain, Sunil Kamal Yadav, Mohammad Wasim Sheikh, Irfan Kudia from Gujarat, Mohammad Arafat Ansari, Khalda Ansari, Akash Yadav, Aziz Khan, and Akram Khan. The identity of the third accused has been withheld.
"We raided a shop in the Azmi Nagar parking lot and the godowns of a marriage hall located in the Malvani area. Later, a farmhouse in Manori-Gorai was also raided, and we seized around 255 litres of chemicals suspected of having been used in the manufacturing of MD drugs," said a crime branch officer.
"We have detained a person associated with the marriage hall, while the owner, identified as Wasim, has also been summoned. The farmhouse in Manori, where the alleged drug manufacturing setup was found, is also owned by Wasim," said another officer.
The raids followed a case which first surfaced on April 4, when the Nayanagar police raided a flat in Mira Road and recovered 1.324 kg of MD drugs valued at over Rs 2.66 crore from a couple - Firdos Arbaaz Qureshi and Arbaaz Vakil Qureshi.
The case was later transferred to the Crime Detection Branch Unit-4. During the investigation, police uncovered a larger organised network involved in manufacturing and distributing MD drugs across Mumbai and nearby regions.
