The Government Railway Police (GRP) have solved a high-value train theft case involving stolen gold worth more than Rs 1.62 crore after a six-month investigation spanning several districts of Maharashtra, reported the PTI.

Four members of a 10-member criminal gang have been arrested, while efforts are continuing to trace the remaining six suspects.

The theft occurred during the night of 6-7 December 2025 aboard the Solapur-Mumbai CSMT Siddheshwar Express.

A 52-year-old gold trader from Goregaon in Mumbai was travelling in an air-conditioned coach with two trolley bags. While he was asleep, thieves allegedly stole one of the bags containing gold ornaments and valuables, according to the PTI.

Following the incident, a theft case was registered at Kalyan Railway Police Station.

The case

"The complainant was travelling with two trolley bags. Taking advantage of his sleep, unidentified thieves stole one of the bags containing gold ornaments and valuables," the GRP statement noted.

Following the incident, the gold trader registered a case at the Kalyan Railway Police Station under Section 305 (C) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) related to theft.

Given the magnitude of the heist, M Rakesh Kalasagar, Commissioner of Police (Railways), Mumbai, and Pragya Jedge, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central Circle), directed the Railway Crime Branch to spearhead the probe.

Months of investigations

The Mumbai Railway Crime Branch launched a detailed investigation under the guidance of senior railway police officers.

Investigators examined hundreds of hours of CCTV footage from railway stations between Solapur and Kalyan, as well as footage from Solapur's bullion market, the news agency reported.

Despite the absence of forensic evidence or immediate leads, police identified 10 suspects through CCTV analysis. Photographs of the suspects were circulated among informants, helping officers trace the gang to villages in Madha taluka of Solapur district.

Special police teams carried out coordinated raids in Barloni, Kavhe and Vadshinge villages, eventually identifying all gang members.

The four arrested suspects have been identified as Ramesh Balu Dikole, Phulchand Gunjal, Dhanraj Gunjal and Punekar Dikole, as per the PTI.

Following interrogation, police recovered three gold bars weighing 1.098 kilograms and valued at Rs 1,62,27,500.

Search continues for remaining suspects

Railway police said efforts are underway to apprehend the remaining six members of the gang.

Officials described the case as a significant success achieved through extensive surveillance analysis, intelligence gathering and coordinated field operations conducted over several months, the news agency reported.
