The Sharad Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP SP) leader Supriya Sule met Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday over four-year-old girl's sexual assault-murder case and demanded strict action against the accused, reported the PTI.
The Baramati MP urged the government to take strict action in the matter, which has triggered widespread outrage across the state.
Sule said that CM Fadnavis, who also heads the Home Department, assured her that he would personally monitor the investigation.
He reportedly promised that the case would be closely supervised until the accused is brought to justice and receives the strictest punishment, she said.
Speaking after the meeting, Sule, the NCP (SP) working president expressed gratitude on behalf of citizens and said there is strong faith in the state leadership and police, according to the PTI.
She added that people trust the system to ensure the case reaches its logical conclusion.
Sule also raised concerns about increasing incidents of violence against women and girls in Maharashtra.
She urged the government to effectively implement the Shakti Act, which was introduced to strengthen legal provisions for women's safety, as per the PTI.
The incident took place in Narsapur in Bhor tehsil of Pune district on May 1.
Police have arrested a 65-year-old man, who had previously been acquitted in two molestation cases, for allegedly sexually assaulting and killing a four-year-old girl, the news agency reported.
Meanwhile, the police on Tuesday said that the post-mortem report has confirmed that the victim died due to asphyxia, reported the PTI.
According to officials, the accused allegedly gagged the child by stuffing a cloth into her mouth, which led to suffocation, the news agency reported.
A senior police officer said the autopsy findings indicate death due to lack of oxygen.
The report also noted injuries on the child's body, indicating the severity of the assault.
Police said the accused allegedly lured the victim with the promise of food before taking her to a secluded cattle enclosure where the crime took place, according to the PTI.
