A woman and four others were allegedly assaulted after she asked a group taking part in a Ganesh immersion procession to move away from her residence while playing loud drums, police said on Thursday.
The incident took place on the night of September 20 in the Subhash Nagar area of Ulhasnagar in Maharashtra's Thane district, officials said. Police have registered a case against 12 people in connection with the alleged assault.
According to police, the 35-year-old woman approached the group after loud drumbeats from the procession disturbed her two children, aged two years and four months.
She allegedly asked the group to move further down the street while continuing with the procession so that the noise would not disturb the children, a police official said.
The request allegedly led to an argument, following which members of the group assaulted the woman and others accompanying her.
The group allegedly assaulted the woman, her husband, brother-in-law and another acquaintance, the official said.
Police said the accused also allegedly abused and threatened the victims during the incident.
The victims subsequently approached the police and lodged a complaint detailing the alleged assault and threats. The complaint formed the basis of the case registered against the 12 accused.
Based on the woman's complaint, police registered a case on Wednesday against 12 people in connection with the incident.
The accused have been booked under provisions relating to unlawful assembly, rioting, causing hurt, criminal intimidation and intentional insult, the police official said.
The case relates to the alleged conduct of the group during the Ganesh immersion procession on September 20. Police are investigating the circumstances that led to the confrontation and the subsequent alleged assault.
The incident occurred during the Ganesh festival period, when immersion processions are held across Maharashtra and are often accompanied by music and drums.
Police are examining the allegations made in the complaint and the sequence of events that preceded the alleged assault. Further action will follow based on the investigation and evidence collected, officials said.
The case has been registered against all 12 individuals named in the complaint, while the investigation into their alleged roles in the incident is underway.
