Mumbai: 16-year old saved from forced prostitution in Kamathipura brothel

A 16-year-old girl was rescued from the clutches of fresh trade after an intensive, five-hour long operation by the Mumbai Police. The girl was found hidden in a small room on the 14th lane of Mumbai's Kamathipura area.

The victim, who originally hails from west Bengal, was forced into the flesh trade after being sent to the city on the pretext of finding a job as domestic help, by her neighbour, Anwar Sheikh and a woman named Amina. A report in the Hindustan Times, states that the girl's parents were paid money before she was brought to Mumbai.

According to the report, Sanjay Baswat, senior inspector of Nagpada police station was quoted as having said, "Amina sold the girl to a 75-year-old brothel owner, Taiyamma Kanchi, on November 8." He also added, We have prepared sketches of Amina and Anwar and have launched a manhunt for them. We are checking if they got other girls to the city. We are investigating if this is an inter-country trafficking racket.'

Upon receiving a lead that the girl was to be sold in the 15th Paperwali Galli in Kamathipura, the Nagpada police sent two of their own undercover as customers, to locate her. They searched every room in the area, as part of their 5-hour long quest to locate her. The brothel owner, Taiyamma Kanchi, has since been detained.
