A major fire broke out at the Gaondevi Vegetable Market building on Gokhale Road in Naupada, Thane West, in the early hours of Thursday, leaving two civic personnel dead and two firefighters injured, officials said.
The incident was reported to the Thane Municipal Corporation's (TMC) Disaster Management Cell at around 3:43 am by local corporator Sanjay Waghule.
A massive firefighting and rescue operation was launched immediately, with multiple civic and emergency agencies rushing to the spot.
The deceased have been identified as Kalu Shankar Gadekar (53), a security guard with the Thane Municipal Corporation, and Sagar Shinde (43), a station officer with the Thane fire brigade.

Two fire brigade personnel, Station Officer Sujit Pashte (45) and fire brigade tandel Sameer Jadhav (40), sustained injuries during the operation. Both were admitted to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital in Kalwa, where they are currently undergoing treatment.
Senior civic officials, including additional and deputy commissioners, the chief fire officer, disaster management officials, police personnel, and MSEDCL staff, are present at the site overseeing operations.
Firefighters are battling the blaze with the help of five fire engines, jumbo water tankers, rescue vehicles, ambulances, and private water tankers. Efforts are continuing to bring the fire under control and prevent further damage.
In a similar incident, a major fire broke out at a cardboard warehouse and a nearby garage in Thane's Kolshet area on Tuesday morning, officials said.
The incident was reported around 7:40 am near the Last Bus Stop on Pipeline Road in Taricha Pada, Thane West, according to the TMC's Disaster Management Cell.
Soon after the alert, personnel from the Disaster Management Cell rushed to the spot with a pickup vehicle, while teams from the Fire Brigade deployed two fire engines and a jumbo water tanker to contain the blaze.
Authorities said there were no injuries.
Firefighters and disaster management officials brought the fire under control.
In a separate incident, a fire broke out at the Andheri East railway reservation office in suburban Mumbai on Monday evening following a short circuit near the Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counter, officials said.
The incident occurred at around 6:20 pm, causing brief panic among staff and passengers present at the booking office.
Fire safety personnel immediately used fire extinguishers to douse the flames.
The fire was brought under control by 6:35 pm, preventing it from spreading to other parts of the office.
Officials said that no injuries were reported in the incident.
Police and civic officials reached the spot soon after the incident to assess the situation. Preliminary findings suggest that an electrical short circuit triggered the fire.
