Three buildings evacuated after tenement portion caves in at Thane (Pic/Special arrangement)
A portion of a tenement collapsed in the Brahmand area of Thane West during the early hours of Friday, leaving two people with minor injuries, officials said.
The incident was reported at around 2:48 am on August 14 near Swastik Park Society, close to Rainbow School in Brahmand in Manpada.
According to the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC), a portion of a tenement in Ramchandra Nagar Chawl, owned by Anjana Gaikwad, collapsed after the ground beneath the structure subsided. The civic body said that the structure was approximately 25 years old.
The two injured individuals were identified as Suresh Gaikwad, 31, who suffered blunt trauma to his leg, and Vaishali Gaikwad, 28, who also sustained blunt trauma to her leg.
Soon after receiving the information about the incident, the officials from the civic administration, Disaster Management Cell and fire brigade reached the spot. Executive Engineer Sanjay Kadam was also present at the site.
The Disaster Management Cell deployed a utility vehicle, while the Fire Brigade sent a fire tender along with station officers and personnel. Disaster Management Cell personnel from the Majiwada-Manpada Ward Committee also reached the location with a pickup vehicle.
Following the collapse, authorities assessed the remaining portion of the structure as hazardous. Safety tape was installed around the affected area to prevent people from entering the site.
As a precautionary measure, three buildings in Ramchandra Nagar Chawl were temporarily vacated. A total of nine residents were advised to stay with their relatives until the area is considered safe.
Furthermore, authorities are monitoring the site and taking precautionary measures in view of the unsafe condition of the remaining structure.
In a separate incident, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has concluded its search and rescue operation at the Kurla West landslide site after recovering eight bodies and evacuating four people, officials said on Thursday.
The landslide was reported at around 3:38 am on August 12 at Garib Nawab Chawl in Ashok Nagar, Kurla West, with several people feared trapped under the debris.
Team 5F of the 5th Battalion NDRF, which had been pre-positioned at Ghatkopar for monsoon duty, was mobilised to the site along with its canine, K9 Jessy.
The team carried out systematic collapsed structure search and rescue (CSSR) operations and debris removal in coordination with the BMC and Mumbai Fire Brigade.
