Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Commissioner Ashwini Bhide on Wednesday conducted an inspection of sanitation work in Mankhurd and Govandi in Mumbai's eastern suburbs, reviewing the progress of cleanliness initiatives and the functioning of the civic body's garbage collection system.
The visit included inspections of sanitation facilities, interactions with frontline workers, and a surprise review of the route followed by a garbage compactor vehicle to assess the efficiency of waste collection operations. The inspection comes as the civic body continues to strengthen its solid waste management efforts across the city.
During the visit, Bhide inspected Solid Waste Management Department outposts located near the Mankhurd and Govandi railway stations. She reviewed the attendance of sanitation workers, checked attendance registers, and assessed the availability of equipment and machinery required for daily cleaning operations.
Officials were instructed to ensure that sanitation infrastructure remains fully operational and that adequate resources are available to maintain regular cleaning activities in the area.

The commissioner further directed officials to install CCTV cameras at identified sensitive locations to monitor illegal dumping and maintain better surveillance. She also called for strict penal action against individuals found violating waste disposal regulations.
As part of the inspection, Bhide carried out a surprise review of a garbage compactor vehicle's operational route. She observed the waste collection process on the ground and issued instructions aimed at improving operational efficiency and strengthening the city's sanitation management system.
During her visit, Bhide interacted with sanitation workers to understand the challenges involved in daily garbage collection and the implementation of waste segregation practices.
She instructed officials to intensify awareness campaigns in slum areas, encouraging residents to segregate waste at the source. According to civic officials, proper segregation helps improve recycling, reduces the burden on landfills, and enhances the overall efficiency of waste management.
While inspecting the ongoing cleanliness drive along roads near the Mankhurd and Govandi railway stations, Bhide noted the presence of abandoned vehicles and unhygienic conditions in certain stretches.
She directed officials to launch a special drive over the coming days to remove abandoned vehicles and carry out comprehensive cleaning of the affected areas. The initiative is expected to improve sanitation and help prevent the accumulation of waste in public spaces.
