After severe rainfall across Maharashtra caused a landslide that disrupted the rail services, Central Railway, while issuing an official statement, said that they have intensified restoration work on the rain-hit Lonavala-Karjat ghat section.
As per the CR, they have deployed over 1,100 labourers, heavy machinery, and engineering teams to restore normal train operations after multiple landslides disrupted the Mumbai-Pune rail corridor earlier this week.
According to the latest update by the Central Railway, one of the affected railway lines was successfully restored and reopened at 10:30 pm on July 7, while work to restore the remaining two lines is progressing on a war footing.
The first passenger train to pass through the restored track was the 11013 Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT)-Coimbatore Express, which departed the affected section at 12:45 am on July 8 under a speed restriction of 30 kmph. This was followed by the 11041 Dadar-Sainagar Shirdi Express at 1:57 am.
In the up direction, the 12702 Hyderabad-CSMT Hussain Sagar Express crossed the restored section at 5:09 am on Wednesday, July 8.
Railway officials, while briefing about the operations, said that teams have been working round the clock despite heavy rainfall, strong winds, poor visibility, and difficult terrain in the ghat section.
The disruption began on July 6, when incessant monsoon rains triggered landslides at multiple locations between Lonavala and Karjat, forcing Central Railway to cancel, divert, short-terminate, short-originate, and reschedule several long-distance trains.
In view of getting things back on track as soon as possible, Central Railway has mobilised more than 1,100 labourers to clear debris and repair damaged tracks. Authorities said that worker safety has been prioritised, with personnel provided raincoats, gumboots, protective equipment, temporary shelters, and food arrangements, including breakfast, lunch, dinner, tea, and snacks.
A fleet of specialised railway engineering equipment has also been deployed at the site, including:
Passengers have been advised to check real-time train running status through the National Train Enquiry System (NTES) app or contact the railway helpline for updates. Central Railway said regular service advisories are also being shared through its official social media channels.
The railway administration has further urged the passengers to cooperate and bear with the temporary inconvenience caused by the natural calamity as restoration work continues.
