The junior college students made one lakh paper bags, of different sizes and colours, using old newspapers. The students formed a group of 10, with a teacher accompanying them, to distribute the bags. They even requested the shopkeepers and vendors to use paper bags, which are eco-friendly. The college started the initiative last year by distributing paper bags at the railway station.

"We encouraged this activity for the students to make them realise the importance of protecting our environment. I am happy with what students have done, which shows that they are aware of their social responsibility. We'll be undertaking similar initiatives in the future as well," said Dr Jayshree Daoo, principal of Sterling College. The college had organised a workshop for students on how to make paper bags and provided them with raw material - old newspapers, strings, glue and scissors.

"I had a wonderful experience, as we disseminated information on keeping the environment clean. Our teachers and friends encouraged us a lot," said Pranali Barne, junior college students.
