The latest and third series of genome sequencing, in which 343 samples underwent the process at Kasturba Hospital, about 88 per cent has been found to be infected with the Delta variant and its derivatives. Out of the total number of samples, 54 patients had taken one dose of vaccine and 168 both doses. Of these 222 patients, 53 needed hospitalisation but no one died. Of the 121 people who hadn't taken a shot, 57 were hospitalised and three of them died. All were elderly with comorbidities.
The third genome sequencing report released on October 17 reveals that 54 per cent of the total 343 samples was infected with Delta variants, 34 per cent with Delta derivatives and 12 per cent with other strains of the virus. About 66 per cent was in the age group of 21 to 60 years. Only 29 children (8 per cent) below 18 years of age were infected. Of these, 11 were infected with the Delta variant, 15 with Delta derivatives and three with other strains of Covid. "This means Covid infection in children is completely under control," said a BMC official.
According to the test results, 185 out of the 343 patients (54 per cent) were infected with the Delta variant and 117 patients (34 per cent) were infected with the Delta derivatives. "Both the Delta variant and derivatives are relatively mildly invasive and do not pose a serious risk. Compared to Delta variants, the Delta derivatives and other strains of the virus are transmitted at a lesser speed," said a health expert associated with the civic body.
Fifty-four patients, who had taken the first dose of the vaccine, contracted Covid, but only seven had to be hospitalised. None needed oxygen supply or intensive care, and all of them recovered. About 168 people who had taken both doses contracted Covid, and 46 of them had to be hospitalised. Seven people needed intensive care, but no one died. A BMC official said, "Out of the 121 people who did not receive a single dose, 57 were admitted. One patient needed oxygen, and another one needed intensive care. Three people died. All were elderly and suffering from diabetes and high blood pressure. Two of them were infected with the Delta derivatives and one with Delta variant. However, all three patients succumbed due to delay in getting to the hospital."
