The Mumbai Dabbawala Association has urged the Maharashtra government to expedite financial assistance to the family of a dabbawala worker who died in a tragic train accident while on duty.
Balu Maruti Gurav (53), a Mumbai dabbawala, lost his life on April 13, 2026, after falling from a crowded suburban local train between Charni Road and Grant Road stations at around 2:50 pm while delivering tiffin boxes.
According to the association, Gurav was the sole earning member of his family. His sudden death has left his dependents facing severe financial hardship, prompting appeals for urgent government support.
The association has requested Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to ensure timely financial assistance to the bereaved family.
Mumbai Dabbawala Association president Subhash Talekar told mid-day.com that the Maharashtra government had sanctioned Rs 5 lakh for the family.
However, he said the amount had not yet been disbursed even after nearly two months.
"The Maharashtra government has granted Rs 5 lakh to the family, but it's been almost two months now, and the family has not received any amount. We request the government to release the financial aid as soon as possible so the family can survive without further delay," Talekar said.
The association has reiterated its demand for the immediate release of the relief amount, stating that timely assistance is crucial for the family's survival following the loss of its sole breadwinner.
