A total of 10,281 Ganesh idols, including 281 public idols, were immersed across Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) limits on Anant Chaturdashi, the civic body said on Saturday.
According to TMC, the immersions were carried out at designated sites under arrangements made by the civic body as part of its environment-friendly Ganeshotsav initiative.
Of the total idols immersed on Anant Chaturdashi, 6,867 were immersed in artificial ponds, 1,745 at creek-side immersion ghats, 1,622 through the special tank immersion system, 36 at idol acceptance centres, and 11 through the mobile immersion facility, the civic body said.
The TMC said citizens responded positively to the immersion arrangements put in place across the city. Mayor Sharmila Pimpalolkar and Municipal Commissioner Saurabh thanked devotees for their cooperation during the immersion process.
Additional Municipal Commissioner 1 Prashant Rode, Additional Municipal Commissioner 2 Major Dr Nitin Rathod, deputy commissioners, and assistant commissioners were present at various immersion ghats under their respective ward committees to monitor the arrangements and thank citizens for their cooperation.
The TMC said 2,971 idols were immersed in the Majiwada-Manpada ward committee area, the highest number among the civic body's ward committees on Anant Chaturdashi.
This was followed by 2,482 immersions in Wagle, 1,379 in Kalwa, 1,187 in Vartak Nagar, 947 in Diva, 832 in Naupada-Kopri, 209 in Uthalsar, 202 in Mumbra, and 72 in Lokmanya-Sawarkar Nagar, taking the total to 10,281.
The civic body also reported significant collection of nirmalya, or floral and other religious offerings, during the immersion process.
Around 11,200 kg of nirmalya was collected from immersion sites on Anant Chaturdashi alone, while 61,000 kg was collected during the entire Ganeshotsav period.
The TMC said the collected nirmalya would be managed through appropriate scientific methods.
The civic body said 59,722 Ganesh idols were immersed across Thane during the entire Ganeshotsav period, covering the one-and-a-half-day, five-day, Gauri-Ganpati, seven-day and Anant Chaturdashi immersion occasions.
Of these, 38,284 idols were immersed in artificial ponds, 12,586 through tank immersion arrangements, 8,058 at creek-side ghats, 611 at idol acceptance centres and 183 through mobile immersion facilities.
The total number of idols immersed through the various arrangements stood at 59,722, the TMC said.
