In the latest development about the IIT Bombay student death case on September 18, the institute has removed Prof Suryanarayana Doola from his position as dean of administrative affairs, while he will continue to serve as a professor there.
The development comes days after a student death on campus triggered demonstrations by campus residents, who submitted 18 demands to IIT Bombay officials.
The removal of Prof Doola from the dean's post was among the demands raised by the students.
Student sources told mid-day that they received an email from the institute on Monday morning informing them about the change. Doola had previously served as Dean of Student Affairs before taking charge as Dean of Administrative Affairs.
While he has now been removed from the deanship, he will continue his academic duties as a professor at IIT Bombay.
Meanwhile, the student body is scheduled to hold a second meeting with IIT Bombay officials on Monday evening to discuss the way forward following the protests and the demands submitted by campus residents.
The meeting is expected to focus on the students' concerns and the course of action to be taken by the institute.
Amid the development, faculty members at IIT Bombay have expressed solidarity with Prof Doola. They said he was only carrying out his responsibilities in accordance with policies approved by the institute's senate.
The faculty's support comes at a time when the institute continues discussions with the city-based IITians over their demands following the student's death on campus.
