The Palghar administration in Maharashtra has distributed financial assistance totalling Rs 30 crore to 15,000 people affected by floods in the district in July, an official said on Wednesday.
Heavy rains between July 5 and 10 caused flooding in several parts of the Vasai, Virar and Nalasopara areas, resulting in widespread damage to residential properties and commercial establishments, Vasai tehsildar Deepak Gaikwad said in a release.
Following the flooding, joint survey teams from the revenue department and the Vasai-Virar City Municipal Corporation assessed the damage and recorded around 19,000 affected applicants eligible for financial assistance.
Of these, 15,000 applicants whose documents were found to be error-free have received financial assistance of Rs 20,000 each, Gaikwad said. The disbursement means that a total of Rs 30 crore has so far been provided to people affected by the July floods.
The assistance is aimed at supporting residents who suffered losses after heavy rainfall led to flooding across parts of the Vasai-Virar region.
However, around 4,000 applications are still pending because of discrepancies in details submitted by applicants. The issues include errors or mismatches in bank account numbers, names and addresses, the official said.
To help resolve these problems and facilitate the release of pending assistance, the administration has launched an online rectification drive. Applicants can track the status of their applications using their name, mobile number or account details and identify the information that needs to be corrected.
A verification camp has also been organised at the Vasai tehsil office from September 21 to 25 to help applicants rectify documentation-related issues.
Gaikwad urged people whose surveys have already been completed to visit the camp and resolve discrepancies in their documents. The administration has asked eligible applicants to complete the correction process so that their pending compensation can be credited without further delay.
The ongoing rectification exercise is expected to help the administration process the remaining applications and ensure that eligible flood-affected residents receive the financial assistance due to them.
The July floods affected several localities in Vasai, Virar and Nalasopara after heavy rains caused flooding in the district, damaging homes and commercial units and leaving thousands of residents seeking relief.
