Flight operations in Mumbai were affected on Monday as heavy rainfall and adverse weather conditions continued across the city, prompting airlines to issue advisories for passengers.
IndiGo said flight schedules could be impacted due to bad weather conditions over Mumbai and advised passengers to check their flight status before travelling to the airport.
"Travel Advisory: Bad weather over Mumbai may impact flight schedules. We are closely monitoring the weather and doing our best to get you where you need to be, safely and smoothly. We request that you stay updated on your flight status via our website or app. Please be assured that our teams are here to assist you at every step and provide full support. Thank you for your patience and understanding," the airline said.
Passengers have been advised to keep track of airline updates as rainfall activity continues across Mumbai and nearby areas.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday issued a red alert for Mumbai, Thane and Raigad districts, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall along with strong winds.
The weather department upgraded its warning from an orange alert to a red alert in the morning after observing changes in weather conditions.
According to the IMD, occasional strong winds with speeds reaching 70-80 kmph are expected over the region.
Authorities have advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel and remain cautious during periods of intense rainfall.
The weather department warned that intense rainfall could lead to flooding in low-lying and urban areas. It also cautioned about the possibility of flash floods and rising water levels in some catchment areas.
The IMD said water could flow over roads and bridges in vulnerable locations, while weak trees, old structures and poorly maintained buildings could be affected due to strong winds and continuous rainfall.
Landslides, mudslides and rock falls are also possible in vulnerable areas, officials said.
Rough sea conditions and strong winds are expected along the Konkan coast. Road, rail, air and ferry services may face disruptions due to the weather conditions.
Essential civic services, including electricity and water supply, could also be impacted.
The IMD has urged commuters to check traffic conditions before starting their journey and follow advisories issued by local authorities.
Residents have been advised to avoid staying in unsafe structures, stay away from open areas during thunderstorms and avoid taking shelter under isolated trees or structures.
People have also been advised to unplug electrical appliances during thunderstorms, avoid water bodies and maintain distance from objects that conduct electricity to reduce the risk of lightning-related incidents.
The weather department said strong winds and heavy rainfall could affect plantations, horticulture and standing crops.
Farmers have been advised to harvest mature crops at the earliest and protect harvested produce. The IMD also suggested moving stored grains to safer locations, avoiding irrigation and chemical spraying, and ensuring proper drainage of excess water from fields.
Authorities said the weather situation is being closely monitored as heavy rainfall continues across the region.
