Search and rescue operations continued for the second day on Thursday at the site of a landslide in Mumbai, where two people are still feared trapped under the debris, officials said.
The landslide struck a row of tenements near a hillock in the Kurla area in the early hours of Wednesday following heavy rains. The incident claimed seven lives and left seven others injured.
Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), fire brigade and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) continued the search operation at the site on Thursday, a civic official said.
The rescue effort has been complicated by the location of the landslide and the narrow access route leading to the affected area. The restricted access has also limited the use of heavy machinery, forcing rescue teams to work carefully while clearing the debris.
The landslide occurred when soil and boulders from an adjoining hillock fell onto three shanties in Gaushiya Chawl in the Ashok Nagar locality of Chirag Nagar.
The debris struck the structures early Wednesday after heavy rainfall in the city, trapping residents inside. Rescue teams launched operations soon after the incident and recovered several people from the affected area.
Seven people died in the incident, while seven others were injured and taken for treatment.
Officials said the possibility of people remaining trapped under the debris could not be ruled out, prompting rescue personnel to continue the operation into Thursday.
The site has posed logistical challenges for the rescue teams because of its narrow approach. Heavy machinery cannot be deployed freely in the area, making the removal of soil and boulders more difficult.

The civic administration has made arrangements for their temporary accommodation while rescue and assessment work continues at the affected site.
Authorities are also assessing the safety of structures and settlements in the surrounding area in view of the landslide and the continuing monsoon conditions.
The BMC said it has been issuing warnings and conducting awareness drives in areas considered vulnerable to landslides and rockfalls, particularly during the monsoon.
The civic body has urged residents in vulnerable locations to remain alert during periods of heavy rainfall and follow instructions issued by authorities.
The search operation at the Sakinaka site remained underway on Thursday as rescue teams continued efforts to locate the two people feared trapped beneath the debris.
