The Solapur Division of Central Railway has conducted its first Independent Safety Assessor (ISA) audit trial of the KAVACH 4.0 automatic train protection system on the Kurduvadi-Boribial section.
The full-functionality trial was conducted on both UP and DOWN Lines of the Kurduvadi-Boribial-Kurduvadi section on September 19 and 20, covering 104.7 route kilometres, Central Railway said in a press release on Monday.
An Independent Safety Assessor team from Italy conducted and validated multiple safety scenarios under field conditions during the trial.
The tests included Signal Passing at Danger (SPAD) prevention, Permanent Speed Restriction (PSR) and loop-line speed control, roll-away protection on a down gradient, automatic whistling at level crossings and Station KAVACH inspection.
The trial also tested automatic SOS generation during unusual stoppages in a block section, along with manual SOS generation by the Station Master through SMOCIP and by the loco pilot through the onboard KAVACH system.
SPAD prevention following a sudden signal put-back was also tested.
As part of the KAVACH 4.0 project, 1,430 RFID tags were installed and programmed along the Kurduvadi-Boribial section, according to Central Railway.
The installation, validation and field trials were carried out in accordance with standards prescribed by the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO).
The trials covered safety functions including prevention of head-on, rear-end and side collisions, roll-back protection, speed control and SOS generation under different operating conditions.
KAVACH is an indigenous Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system designed to assist in preventing incidents such as Signal Passing at Danger, head-on collisions and rear-end collisions.
The system can also generate an automatic SOS from a locomotive in case of an unusual stoppage within a block section. Manual SOS alerts can be generated by loco pilots through the onboard KAVACH system and by station masters through SMOCIP.
The successful completion of the ISA audit trial marks a key step in the deployment and validation of KAVACH 4.0 on the Solapur Division of Central Railway.
Earlier in July, the Indian Railways commissioned the indigenous Kavach 4.0 safety system on the Mathura-Kota section of the high-density Delhi-Mumbai route.
