Maharashtra is set to introduce its first Quantum Policy and Deep Tech Policy, with Chief Minister (CM) Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday saying the state would become the first in the country to implement a comprehensive policy framework for the deep-tech ecosystem.

The announcement was made after a meeting chaired by Fadnavis at his official residence, Varsha, to review the proposed policies. Minister for Electronics, Information Technology and Artificial Intelligence Ashish Shelar and senior government officials attended the meeting.

According to the CM, the two policies have received approval and will be placed before the state Cabinet for final clearance at an upcoming meeting.

Fadnavis said the policies are aimed at promoting research, innovation, investment, and high-skilled employment in emerging technology sectors. He added that the initiative forms part of the state's efforts to strengthen its position in advanced technology and innovation-driven industries.

"The implementation of these policies will provide a boost to investment, research, innovation and employment generation in high-technology sectors," Fadnavis said.

The proposed policies focus on areas such as quantum technologies and deep-tech innovation, which are increasingly being viewed as key drivers of future economic growth and technological development.

Further details of the policies are expected after they receive final cabinet approval.

Maharashtra to create 8,000 jobs with Rs 1.14 lakh crore green AI data centre project

The proposed policies come as the state government seeks to expand investments in advanced technology sectors. Last month, Maharashtra signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with AM Intelligence Labs Private Limited for a proposed investment of Rs 1.14 lakh crore in an Integrated Green Data Centre Park and AI Compute Hub in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).

The agreement was signed in the presence of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The project includes the development of an Integrated Green Data Centre Park and an AI Compute Hub in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).

According to the MoU, the project will generate 8,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities. This includes jobs for skilled and semi-skilled youth, particularly software engineers, data scientists, and operations teams. Additionally, around 2,000 jobs are expected to be created during the construction phase.

The entire project will be powered by renewable energy, making it an environment-friendly initiative. It will have a total capacity of 500 MW and will use 2,50,000 high-capacity AI chipsets. The project will be developed in two phases - the first 200 MW phase is targeted for completion by 2028 and the second 300 MW phase by 2030.

The development will be carried out under Maharashtra's Information Technology Policy 2023 and the Green Integrated Data Centre Park Policy 2024.
