To crack down on exam paper leaks, the Maharashtra government is considering legal changes to allow those arrested in TET (Teacher Eligibility Test) and other paper leak cases to be booked under the stringent MCOCA. It also plans to appoint a committee headed by the chief secretary to suggest measures for shifting examinations to an online mode.
On Monday morning, School Education Minister Dada Bhuse made a statement on the TET exam paper leak issue on the floor of the House, claiming that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed to probe the paper leak.
According to Bhuse, the government is contemplating necessary changes in the rules so that those arrested in the TET and other paper leak cases can be booked under the stringent organised crime act. The minister also asserted that the government will now conduct online exams. "A committee under the chief secretary of Maharashtra will be formed to suggest transparent and proper conduct of online exams," Bhuse said.
The Maharashtra TET paper leak issue rocked the state Legislative Assembly on Monday, with the Opposition demanding that the Question Hour be suspended to allow an immediate discussion. Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA Bhaskar Jadhav and Congress MLA Vijay Wadettiwar raised the issue, saying the alleged leak had shaken the confidence of lakhs of aspirants. Speaker Rahul Narwekar rejected the demand to suspend the Question Hour but agreed that the matter was serious and asked the government to take cognisance of it.
Senior BJP MLA Sudhir Mungantiwar questioned the government for printing the paper in another state. "The Government of India prints currency at Nashik in Maharashtra. That is the level of confidence in Maharashtra. But our own Maharashtra government prints paper in Agra. This practice of printing paper outside Maharashtra should be stopped," Mungantiwar said.
The Maharashtra TET 2026 exam was postponed on Saturday, just a day before it was scheduled to be held, after parts of the question paper were allegedly leaked. According to information shared in the Assembly, three people have been arrested in the case. Maharashtra police teams are also visiting Bihar, Delhi, and Haryana in connection with the probe.
