The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday issued red alerts for Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, and several ghat regions of Maharashtra, warning of extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places accompanied by strong winds over the next two days. The forecast comes amid an active monsoon spell that has already disrupted normal life across parts of the state.
According to the IMD's district-wise forecast issued at 12.20 pm on Monday, Mumbai, Thane, and Raigad are likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places, with extremely heavy rainfall at isolated locations, along with occasional strong winds reaching 70-80 kilometre per hour (kmph) on Monday. Similar conditions are expected to persist on Tuesday, although the intensity is likely to ease slightly thereafter.
The IMD has also issued red alerts for the Ghats of Pune, Nashik, and Satara, where extremely heavy rainfall is forecast at isolated places along with strong winds of 60-70 kmph. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is also expected in Ratnagiri, while Sindhudurg is likely to witness heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds.
An orange alert has been issued for Palghar, where heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds of 70-80 kmph is likely over the next two days. Pune district is also under an orange alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall with gusty winds, while Nashik district is expected to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places.
In north Maharashtra, isolated heavy rainfall with thunderstorms and gusty winds has been forecast for Dhule, Nandurbar and Jalgaon on Monday, with heavy rainfall and winds of 60-70 kmph expected on Tuesday. Ahilyanagar is also likely to receive heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds.
Across Vidarbha, districts including Akola, Amravati, Bhandara and Gondia are likely to witness heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds at isolated places, while several other districts have been warned of thunderstorms with lightning and moderate rainfall.
The IMD has warned that the intense rainfall may lead to localised flooding in low-lying areas, flash floods, landslides, disruption to road, rail, air and ferry services, rough sea conditions along the Konkan coast, uprooting of weak trees and damage to vulnerable structures.
The weather agency has advised people to check traffic conditions before travelling, avoid vulnerable structures, stay away from water bodies during thunderstorms, avoid taking shelter under trees and keep away from electrical conductors during lightning activity. Farmers have also been advised to harvest mature crops, avoid irrigation and chemical spraying, and ensure proper drainage from fields.
The IMD said the forecast is based on the latest observations and numerical weather prediction models and advised citizens to keep track of the latest weather bulletins over the coming days.
