Maharashtra continued to reel under hot and dry weather conditions on Wednesday, with Vidarbha emerging as the worst-affected region as temperatures soared well above normal across several districts, according to data released by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
Several districts across Vidarbha continued to sizzle today with maximum temperatures crossing the 40 degrees Celsius mark at most locations. Brahmapuri recorded the highest temperature in the state at 45.5 degrees Celsius, highlighting the severity of the ongoing heatwave-like conditions.
Wardha followed at 43.9 degrees Celsius, while Nagpur registered 43.8 degrees Celsius. Bhandara and Gondia recorded 43.0 degrees Celsius each, reflecting widespread intense heat across central and eastern Vidarbha.
Other major centres also witnessed soaring temperatures, including Chandrapur at 42.8 degrees Celsius, Gadchiroli at 42.4 degrees Celsius, Akola at 42.6 degrees Celsius, Amravati at 42.4 degrees Celsius, Washim at 41.6 degrees Celsius and Yavatmal at 42.4 degrees Celsius. Buldhana remained relatively lower at 40.3 degrees Celsius but continued to stay above normal seasonal levels.
The heat extended across Central Maharashtra, where several cities reported temperatures above 35 degrees Celsius. Jalgaon recorded 41.7 degrees Celsius, making it one of the hottest locations outside Vidarbha, followed by Malegaon at 41.0 degrees Celsius.
Solapur registered 38.0 degrees Celsius, while Pune and Nashik recorded 36.0 degrees Celsius and 36.1 degrees Celsius, respectively.
In contrast, Mahabaleshwar remained the coolest location in the state, with a maximum temperature of 24.6 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 19.4 degrees Celsius.
The Konkan region continued to experience warm and humid weather. Mumbai's Colaba observatory recorded a maximum temperature of 35.5 degrees Celsius, while Santacruz registered 35.3 degrees Celsius.
Alibag reported 38.2 degrees Celsius, Dahanu 37.4 degrees Celsius, Ratnagiri 33.2 degrees Celsius and Panaji 31.9 degrees Celsius.
Marathwada also remained under the grip of hot weather, with Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and Nanded both recording 39.8 degrees Celsius.
Parbhani registered a similar maximum temperature of 39.8 degrees Celsius, while data for Dharashiv's maximum temperature was unavailable.
Rainfall activity remained largely absent across Maharashtra over the past 24 hours, reinforcing the prevailing dry weather pattern.
Only isolated pockets of Vidarbha recorded light rainfall, with Gondia receiving 0.8 millimetres and Nagpur recording 0.2 millimetres. Most other districts remained completely dry. Pune reported no rainfall and continued to face a rainfall deficit of 53.7 millimetres.
Relative humidity levels varied across Vidarbha, ranging from the low 30s to nearly 69 per cent during the morning hours. However, the limited moisture in the atmosphere provided little respite from the oppressive heat, with dry conditions continuing to dominate the region.
Meteorological officials said the combination of soaring daytime temperatures, dry weather and negligible rainfall is likely to keep heatwave-like conditions intact across several parts of Maharashtra in the coming days. With no significant rainfall activity forecast immediately, residents are expected to continue facing heat stress, particularly across Vidarbha and parts of Central Maharashtra.
