The state cabinet on Tuesday gave its approval for handing over 8.5 hectares of Kurla Dairy land to the Dharavi Redevelopment Project Pvt Ltd (DRPPL).

Despite opposition from locals and opposition parties, the Mahayuti government (BJP, Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena and Ajit Pawar's NCP) went ahead with the approval for land transfer. On Tuesday, the state cabinet gave its approval for amending certain terms and conditions to facilitate transfer of the land parcel at Kurla.

The government seems to be moving with haste to transform Asia's largest slums into a modern, sustainable neighbourhood. Last week, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis chaired a review meeting for the Dharavi redevelopment. It was during this meeting, the CM gave his nod to the DRPPL master plan.

The revamp of Dharavi will be carried out by Navbharat Mega Developers Pvt Ltd (NMDPL) - a joint venture between Adani Group and the Maharashtra government. The Adani group holds an 80 per cent stake in NMDPL, while the balance is held by the state government.
