Mumbai witnessed another tragic rain-related incident on Thursday after a man fell into an open manhole on Khairani Road in the Sakinaka area while maintenance work was underway.
According to information received by mid-day.com, the deceased has been identified as Aslam Isak Shaikh (55), a resident of Yadav Nagar, Sakinaka.
According to the Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB), the incident was reported at 12.26 pm from Khairani Road near Sanman Hotel, close to SJ Studio in Sakinaka.
Officials said Shaikh accidentally fell into the open manhole while talking on his mobile phone. According to information received from police personnel at the spot, three private contractual workers had removed the manhole cover to carry out maintenance work when the incident occurred.
The workers immediately lowered a ladder into the manhole in an attempt to rescue him. However, they recovered only Shaikh's umbrella and slippers. Due to the strong flow of rainwater inside the drainage system, it was not immediately possible to determine the direction in which he had been swept away.
The Mumbai Fire Brigade, along with other emergency response agencies, launched a search operation soon after the incident was reported.
In the latest update received from the Mumbai Fire Brigade at 2.15 pm, officials said Shaikh's body had been located inside the drainage system. Fire brigade personnel at the site were attempting to retrieve the body.
Further investigation into the incident is underway.
In a separate rain-related incident, Dahisar Police rescued an injured man who had become trapped inside a drain after entering it under circumstances that are yet to be confirmed.
According to the police, the Control Room alerted officers about a man who had entered a drain and sustained injuries. A team from Dahisar Police Station immediately reached the location and launched a rescue operation.
The man was found trapped near a section of the drain with a strong flow of water. To reach him, police personnel cut through an iron mesh that obstructed access before safely pulling him out.
After the rescue, the injured man was provided with immediate medical attention. Police subsequently traced his relatives and reunited him with his family.
The two incidents come as Mumbai continues to experience heavy rainfall, with emergency services responding to weather-related emergencies across different parts of the city. Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious during periods of intense rain, avoid flooded areas, and stay away from open drains, manholes, and fast-flowing water to reduce the risk of accidents. Rescue agencies remain on alert as the city continues to receive intermittent showers.
