After mid-day brought the non-functional traffic signal en route to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport Terminal 2 to the attention of traffic authorities, action has been taken to repair it, providing commuters on the road a much-needed respite. Following the mid-day report, Deputy Commissioner of Police Traffic (Western Suburbs) Ajit Borhade took immediate action to get the light fixed.

The issue

The signal on the road below the airport's direct elevated corridor is located at the airport parking exit, enabling those who exit the airport to travel towards Marol or further ahead towards Andheri East and Powai.

However, the view of two working traffic lights was blocked by surrounding greenery in certain angles, and the only lights in clear view had been nonfunctional from the last week of April till the second week of May. This led to commuters claiming the area was becoming accident-prone.

Voices

Mohammad Tassuvar Shaik, autorickshaw driver
‘After weeks, I came to this area. When I saw that the vehicles were actually stopping here, and that the lights were working, it felt a lot more organised. Now that doesn't mean that there aren't people who won't break the rules, but when the majority is following them, it is a good sign.'

Kamlesh Gupta, autorickshaw driver
‘It is very good that the lights have been repaired, and we are very happy that the traffic police have done their job to ensure roads are safe, but I hope that it has been repaired well enough to last through the monsoon. We can only hope that everyone will drive properly while having civic sense now.'

A woman who frequently uses the road,
‘I work at the airport and often cross the road from the airport exit side to get an autorickshaw. Today, for the first time in weeks, I have been able to cross the road without having to manoeuvre around vehicles speeding past me.'
