The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has set up a Safety & Response Co-ordination Centre (SRCC) to coordinate emergency responses, safety concerns and public grievances related to its infrastructure projects across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

The centre is now operational and will function as a central point for reporting and monitoring concerns related to MMRDA projects, according to a release by MMRDA.

24x7 control room launched

The SRCC will operate a 24x7 control room at 1800-22-8801, allowing citizens to report project-related emergencies, potential safety hazards and grievances, the release added.

Complaints can include concerns over construction-site safety, barricading, traffic management around project works, road conditions or damage linked to construction activity, dust and other project-related inconvenience.

Complaints to be tracked until resolution

According to MMRDA, complaints received through the centre will first be registered and assessed based on their nature and urgency. They will then be forwarded to the relevant project or engineering team for verification and necessary action.

Urgent issues requiring immediate safety intervention will be prioritised and escalated to the appropriate authorities.

The SRCC will also monitor the response and corrective action until the complaint is addressed and closed, the release said.

The process will follow six stages: report, assess, verify, respond, monitor and close.

MMRDA dashboard to track complaints across projects

The SRCC will conduct daily monitoring of complaints, action taken and pending issues.

MMRDA said a dedicated dashboard will provide senior management with a consolidated view of complaints across its projects, including their nature, status and recurrence. It will also track trends related to individual projects, contractors and general consultants.

The system is intended to help the authority identify recurring issues, delays and accountability gaps and take corrective and preventive measures.

Centre to strengthen existing safety systems

MMRDA is currently implementing metro corridors, roads, bridges, tunnels, flyovers and other infrastructure projects across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

The authority said existing project-level safety responsibilities will continue to remain with contractors, consultants, engineers and project teams. The SRCC will provide an additional authority-wide mechanism to coordinate, monitor and track reported concerns.

Information collected through the centre will also be used to identify recurring safety issues and response patterns across projects, allowing corrective measures from one project to be considered for other relevant sites.

MMRDA chief says centre will improve response

MMRDA Metropolitan Commissioner Dr Sanjay Mukherjee, IAS, said the centre has been established amid the large scale of infrastructure works underway across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

He said the SRCC would create a coordinated system covering reporting, verification, action and closure, while its daily review and dashboard would help identify recurring concerns and ensure accountability.
