Addressing the growing concerns among Municipal Councillors regarding the ongoing 10 per cent cut in the city's municipal water supply, The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) Hydraulics Department gave a presentation in the BMC's Standing Committee on Thursday.

Additional Municipal Commissioner incharge of the Hydraulics department, Abhijit Bangar delivered the presentation which was aimed at informing the public representatives about the current status of the city's water storage, related issues, and why the 10 per cent cut can't be lifted yet.

Bangar reiterated that the water cut can't be rolled back yet citing the need to conserve water to make the city's water storage last till the next Monsoon.

Addressing the concern of residents struggling with basic water needs as raised by the committee members, Bangar said the issues regarding low water pressure, and some areas experiencing water supply lesser than 90 per cent will be addressed. "We can't lift the water cut yet, but we are working on making the effect reflect fairly for all areas" said Bangar.

According to civic officials, the issue of the water cut being experienced unequally by residents of some elevated areas or areas that lie farer to the main pipelines is the key part of the BMC's immediate strategy. "Further day wise rationing for sub areas can curb water supply issues for the residents who are suffering" a civic official said.

Long term solutions

In the presentation, Non Revenue Water (NRW) remained a highlight among long term solutions. Bangar said, not immediately but over few years we can decrease the current water wastage numbers. If BMC manages to decrease the 34 per cent NRW to 24 per cent, the city's water supply will effectively surge by as much MLD of water as a dam like Gargai, said Bangar.
