Three passengers complained of uneasiness after the air-conditioning system of a Central Railway suburban AC local malfunctioned during the Monday morning peak. One of them was later discharged from hospital after treatment, railway officials said.
In an official statement, Central Railway's Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) said three passengers travelling on the Titwala-Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) AC local, which departed Titwala at 8.33 am, reported uneasiness due to the non-functioning air-conditioning system.
The passengers were provided all possible assistance at Mulund station at 9.38 am. Two passengers felt better after deboarding the train and getting fresh air, following which they continued their onward journey.
The third passenger, identified as Fahim Ansari, was referred to a hospital at 10.09 am. He was administered the necessary treatment and discharged at 11.30 am after being found fit, the CPRO said.
The AC local departed Mulund station at 9.54 am. The rake was subsequently withdrawn from service at Kurla and sent to the Kurla Car Shed for a detailed inquiry, inspection and necessary corrective action.
According to Central Railway, subsequent morning services were operated using non-AC rakes.
Earlier in the day, the Titwala-CSMT AC local developed an air-conditioning fault during the morning peak hours, leading to complaints of discomfort from passengers. To improve ventilation, the train was operated with its doors open between Mulund and Kurla before being withdrawn from service.
Last month, Central Railway expanded its AC suburban network by upgrading 12 non-AC local train services to AC services on the Main Line.
With the addition, the total number of AC suburban services on the Central Railway network has increased to 120, including 92 on the Main Line and 28 on the Harbour Line. Of the 12 upgraded services, three operate during peak hours - the 6.46 am Titwala-CSMT, 9.16 am Ghatkopar-CSMT morning services and the 7.18 pm CSMT-Kalyan evening local.
Central Railway said the total number of suburban services across all lines in the Mumbai Division will remain unchanged at 1,820 weekday services, despite the conversion of 12 non-AC services into AC locals. The move is part of the railway's ongoing efforts to improve commuter comfort and modernise Mumbai's suburban rail network.
