The Maharashtra Transport Department has ordered action against app-based taxi and ride-hailing companies following complaints that passengers are being pressured to pay forced tips and additional charges.
Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik issued the directive after taking immediate cognisance of concerns raised by Kalyan MP Dr. Shrikant Eknath Shinde regarding alleged unfair practices in the sector.
In recent days, several complaints have surfaced from passengers alleging that app-based taxi drivers are demanding extra tips or additional payments after accepting rides.
According to the complaints, passengers who refuse to pay extra are either facing ride cancellations or being subjected to inconvenience and pressure during travel.
Dr. Shinde raised the issue publicly on social media and urged the state government to take immediate action to protect commuters from such practices.

He directed the Transport Commissioner to investigate the functioning of the concerned companies and initiate strict action wherever necessary.
The minister also thanked Dr. Shinde for highlighting the issue and assured that the matter would be dealt with seriously.
The Transport Department has indicated that it will introduce key reforms to curb arbitrary practices in the ride-hailing sector.
Officials said a new aggregator policy is being prepared to regulate app-based taxi services more effectively and ensure transparency, fairness and accountability in passenger services.
Dr. Shrikant Shinde had earlier stated that passengers are being financially exploited during times of need, with some being pressured into paying extra amounts or facing mental harassment.
He said such practices violate consumer rights and cannot be justified under any circumstances.
He emphasised that tips should always be voluntary and linked to service quality, not forced through pressure or refusal of service.
Following the minister's directive, commuters are expected to benefit from stricter enforcement and regulatory oversight in the app-based transport sector.
The officials have indicated that action against erring companies will help ensure more transparent, fair and reliable services for passengers across Maharashtra.
