Mumbai Police have arrested a 20-year-old man for allegedly stealing 50 umbrellas worth Rs 15,000 from a stationery shop in Charkop Market and recovered all the stolen property from him, officials said.
According to the police, the complainant, Karsan Devji Van (40), who owns a stationery shop in the market, approached Charkop Police on July 18 and reported that an unidentified person had stolen 50 SUN brand umbrellas from his shop on the evening of July 16.
Based on his complaint, the police registered a case under Section 303(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and launched an investigation.
Following the probe, the police arrested Santosh Shankar Adidravidar (20). During questioning, the accused allegedly confessed to committing the theft and said that he had carried out the crime with the help of an accomplice identified as Salamon, using his motorcycle.
"We later recovered all 50 stolen umbrellas from the accused, claiming to have solved the case," an official said.
Following the arrest, the accused was produced before a court, which remanded him in police custody until July 30.
The investigation is being carried out by Police Inspector Raju Thorat of the crime detection team at Charkop Police Station under the supervision of Senior Police Inspector Mahesh Balwantrao.
In a separate incident, a distinct physical feature spotted in CCTV footage - a crooked finger - helped the Wadala police identify and arrest a 33-year-old history-sheeter accused of breaking into a grocery shop and allegedly stealing cigarette cartons worth Rs 69,000 earlier this month.
The accused, identified as Ashfaq Aslam Sayyed, a resident of PMGP Colony in Mankhurd, was arrested on the evening of July 24 after investigators zeroed in on him using CCTV footage, technical surveillance, and local intelligence. Police have also seized a Mahindra Scorpio car allegedly used during the crime and are working to recover the stolen property.
According to the police, the burglary took place at around 3.20 am on July 9 at Mahalaxmi General Store in Nityanand Nagar, Wadala East. The complainant, Vipul Anubha Jadeja, 28, who runs the shop, approached the police after discovering that there had been a break-in and cartons of cigarettes worth approximately Rs 69,000 were stolen.
According to the police, the accused is a history sheeter with several cases registered against him at Mankhurd and Kurla police stations between 2012 and 2025. He is also wanted in a similar housebreaking case registered at Kurla police station in 2025. Police said efforts are underway to recover the stolen cigarette cartons and ascertain whether the accused was involved in even more offenses in the city.
