The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will conduct a special drive against unauthorised constructions in slum areas from October 1 to December 31, 2026, the civic body said on Saturday.
As part of the drive, action will be taken against slum structures measuring 14 feet or more in height. The BMC has appealed to residents living in unauthorised constructions in slum areas to remove them voluntarily and immediately, failing which strict action will be taken.
The drive is being conducted against unauthorised constructions in slum areas under the directions of BMC Commissioner Ashwini Bhide, the guidance of Additional Municipal Commissioner (City) Prajakta Verma-Lavangare, and the leadership of Joint Commissioner (Vigilance) Devender Singh.
According to the BMC, there are 2,23,150 slum structures in the Brihanmumbai area, comprising Mumbai city and the suburbs. Of these, 39,111 structures have been found to be 14 feet or more in height.
Of the 39,111 structures, 3,348 are located in the city area, 4,536 in the western suburbs, and 31,227 in the eastern suburbs.
The civic body said eviction action has already been taken against 4,584 of these structures, while notices have been issued to 611 structures.
The BMC has urged residents living in the remaining structures to remove the unauthorised constructions immediately on their own. It warned that strict action would otherwise be taken against them.
The BMC said its various administrative wards have been continuously taking action against unauthorised constructions across Brihanmumbai.
Between August 24 and September 15, 2026, eviction action was taken against 128 unauthorised constructions, while action against another 140 unauthorised constructions has been planned.
The administration has urged citizens not to undertake unauthorised constructions and to remove such structures immediately on their own if they have already been constructed.
The civic body reiterated that strict action would be taken against those who fail to comply.
The civic body's latest action comes amid a wider focus on improving conditions in Mumbai's slum and densely populated areas. Earlier, the BMC had approved in principle a technology-driven cleanliness scheme for such localities, with measures including GPS-based monitoring and a QR-based complaint system to improve sanitation oversight.
