AMID the prevailing vaccine shortage in the city, hundreds of residents in the T ward who took Covaxin have been left in the lurch. None of the vaccination centres in the T ward has had Covaxin doses since April 18. On Wednesday, the ward received 1,000 doses of the vaccine, which will be used to immunise people waiting for their second dose. There are 3,750 people in the ward waiting for the second dose.
Many of those waiting for their second dose are senior citizens.
Kamal Kotai, a Mulund resident said, "My 90-year-old father and aunt are due for the second dose of Covaxin next week. I have been enquiring about the stock availability, there is a lot of uncertainty."
"Since April 18, Mulund hasn't received any vials of Covaxin. I have met Additional Municipal Commissioner Suresh Kakani and he has assured me that the vaccine will be made available to the T ward soon," said Mihir Kotecha, MLA from Mulund. "There are 3,750 people who are waiting for the second dose. BMC hasn't placed an order for the vaccine which is causing the delay," he said.
The new stock will be used exclusively to give the second dose to senior citizens. The drive will be organised at an open ground at ESIC Hospital.
"There is an acute shortage of Covaxin and Covishield in T ward. We don't know when Covishield's stock will come. We have been told by authorities to give preference to people whose second jab is due," Kishor Gandhi, assistant commissioner, T ward told mid-day.
