An Indian Navy sailor, his wife, and their two children were found dead at their residence in Mumbai's Navy Nagar area on Saturday, Mumbai Police said.
The sailor is suspected to have died by suicide. Mumbai Police, in a statement, said that prima facie, the deaths of the sailor's wife and two children, aged two months and three years respectively, appear to have been caused by poisoning.
The police said a post-mortem examination is being conducted to establish the exact cause of death. Further investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident is underway.
In an official statement, the Indian Navy said, "In an unfortunate incident at Navy Nagar, Colaba, an Indian Navy sailor along with his wife and two children have been found dead at their residence on 15 Aug, 26. Investigation is in progress by the Police and the Indian Navy is extending all possible assistance towards the same."
Authorities are probing the circumstances leading to the deaths, while the exact sequence of events and motive, if any, remain under investigation.
A senior Mumbai Police official said, "On August 15, 2026, the Cuffe Parade Police Station in Mumbai received information regarding a man found hanging in the Navy Nagar area of Cuffe Parade, and the discovery of his wife and two children dead inside their residence. Following an inquiry, a case of unnatural death has been registered."
"The deceased man was aged 30, while his wife, aged 28, their son aged 3, and an infant aged two months, were found dead on the bed," a senior Mumbai Police official said.
While highlighting about the ongoing investigation, the police officials also added, "All four bodies were transported to JJ Hospital, Mumbai, via the Cuffe Parade police mobile unit. The inquest panchnama has been completed, and the post-mortem process is currently underway. Preliminary inquiries indicate that the man died by suicide, while it appears prima facie that his wife and two children died due to poisoning."
