The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said it is working on an urgent basis to repair a damaged 1200 mm diameter water main in the Kurla South area, which has disrupted water supply in several parts of the locality since Saturday.

According to an update shared by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation on social media platform X, the pipeline - located at a depth of around five metres - has been under continuous repair since Saturday evening.

The tweet stated that the excavation teams are facing significant technical challenges due to limited working space, with a 300 mm Mahanagar Gas Limited pipeline on one side and a bridge pile foundation on the other.

The damaged section of the pipeline, measuring around 1.5 metres, has now been fully exposed, and work to replace it is in progress. The civic body has said repairs are expected to be completed by Sunday evening, following which water supply will be restored in a phased manner.

The BMC has appealed to residents to remain patient and said it is closely monitoring the situation. It added that all necessary steps are being taken to complete the work at the earliest and minimise inconvenience.

Residents in Kurla South and nearby areas have faced water disruption for over 24 hours, with several reporting reliance on water tankers and delays in communication.

Officials have urged citizens to use water judiciously during the restoration phase. Further updates will be issued as the work progresses.

CIDCO announces 10 per cent water cut across Navi Mumbai

Residents living in CIDCO-administered nodes across Navi Mumbai and adjoining areas will face a 10 per cent water cut from May 28, as the civic planning authority moves to conserve dwindling water reserves amid fears of delayed monsoon and rising summer temperatures.

The City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) said the decision was taken after reviewing the declining usable water stock in key reservoirs supplying water to its areas.

Water supplied to CIDCO nodes comes from Hetawane Dam, Morbe Dam, Barvi Dam operated by MIDC, and the Patalganga Dam managed by Maharashtra Jeevan Pradhikaran (MJP). According to CIDCO, soaring temperatures this summer have increased evaporation levels while the available water stock in reservoirs has steadily reduced.

The authority also cited forecasts related to El Niño and Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) conditions, which could impact rainfall patterns and delay the arrival of the monsoon.

"As a precautionary measure to avoid possible water scarcity in the coming weeks, a 10 per cent water cut will be implemented from May 28," the release stated.
