Mumbai Metro One Pvt. Ltd. (MMOPL), operator of Metro Line 1, on Sunday marked 12 years of operations, highlighting its evolution into one of the city's most widely used public transport systems with over 125 crore commuter journeys since its launch in June 2014.
The metro corridor, which was Mumbai's first, has recorded a peak single-day ridership of 5.79 lakh passengers and maintains a punctuality rate of 99.99 per cent, according to the operator. MMOPL also said the line has maintained a zero-fatality safety record since its inception.
Over the past 12 years, the metro has positioned itself as a key mobility link across the city, connecting residential and commercial hubs and easing daily congestion, the statement said.
The operator said it has completed over 15 lakh trips while gradually upgrading stations into retail and commuter-friendly spaces and introducing technology-led passenger services, including integrated ticketing via ONDC.
As part of its anniversary initiatives, MMOPL announced the launch of a co-branded RuPay "On-The-Go" National Common Mobility Card (NCMC) in partnership with Airtel Payments Bank.
The card is designed to enable seamless, interoperable travel across multiple public transport systems under the Centre's "One Nation, One Card" framework.
Initially, the card will be usable across Mumbai Metro Line 1, Metro Lines 2A and 7, Metro Line 3, BEST buses, and the upcoming monorail network, with nationwide transit compatibility also planned.
Speaking on the occasion, MMOPL CEO Shyamantak Choudhury said the milestone reflects commuter trust and consistent service delivery. He added that the new mobility card marks another step toward building an integrated urban transport ecosystem.
Airtel Payments Bank Executive Director-Business Operations Ganesh Ananthanarayanan said the partnership aims to simplify commuting through secure, digital-first payment solutions across transit networks.
The operator said Mumbai Metro One remains focused on expanding capacity, improving commuter experience, and supporting sustainable urban mobility as Mumbai's metro network continues to grow.
