A 23-year-old man was arrested by Ghatkopar police for allegedly throwing his nine-month-old son off a skywalk outside Ghatkopar railway station following an argument with his wife on Sunday night. The infant, Aarav, sustained serious injuries and is undergoing treatment in the intensive care unit (ICU) of Sion Hospital.
The accused, identified as Jafar Shaikh, lives in Ghatkopar's Sarvodaya Nagar area with his 22-year-old wife, Aarti Jafar Shaikh, who is the complainant in the case. The couple allegedly married around two years ago and have a nine-month-old son. According to a police official, Shaikh sells clothes in the area, and the couple had reportedly been having frequent arguments over the past few months, allegedly linked to his substance-use habit.
The incident took place at around 8:10 pm on October 25, when Aarti was standing with her son on the skywalk outside Ghatkopar railway station. Jafar arrived at the spot and allegedly started arguing with her.
"During the altercation, he allegedly abused his wife and attempted to take the infant with him. When Aarti tried to stop him, he allegedly threw the child off the skywalk in a fit of rage, with the intention of killing him," Senior Police Inspector Vitthal Ardekar of Ghatkopar PS said.
Aarti immediately rushed downstairs and, with the help of locals, took the injured child to Rajawadi Hospital. Given the severity of his injuries, the infant was subsequently shifted to Sion Hospital, where he is being treated in the ICU.
Police personnel from Ghatkopar police station also acted promptly. Constable Bharat Thakur and Assistant Police Inspector Reena Lohar helped rush the child to Rajawadi Hospital, facilitating immediate medical attention.
Ghatkopar police have registered a case against Jafar under Section 109(1) (attempt to murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
Ardekar confirmed that the accused had been arrested in connection with the incident. He said further investigation was underway.
